WEST HAVEN, Dec. 14, 2015 — Forest Elementary School’s Dec. 1 Family Math Night had all the usual offerings that families have come to expect and enjoy—a school community dinner, educational games, ideas for at-home math activities—but with a twist.

The event featured the Arithmetickles Show, a touring New Jersey-based assembly program that takes math “off the page and onto the stage,” according to Ben Bendor, one of the creators of Arithmetickles and the coordinator of the show held at Forest.

Bendor used theater games, audience participation, improvisation, miming, puzzles, skits and stand-up comedy to capture the attention of Forest’s math night attendees. All of the activities were centered around making math fun.

Arithmetickles demonstrated that numbers, shapes, percentages, fractions and logic are a part of students’ everyday lives. Without realizing it, students were using various problem-solving skills and advanced computation. The program also showed kids how to creatively explore and solve math problems in real-life situations.

The Arithmetickles show also got parents involved by bringing them on stage to join their kids during various games.

The December family night was just one of several that will be held at Forest this year. Forest and other schools in the West Haven Public School District hold Family Math Nights and Family Literacy Nights to give parents and guardians additional opportunities to be involved in their children’s education and to offer kids a fun evening that is also educational.

The next Family Math Night at Forest will be scheduled for this spring.
